Former Soccer Pro Dies After Collapsing Mid-Game: Michael Eneramo Was 40

Former Nigeria international Michael Eneramo has died after collapsing during a friendly match, the Nigerian Football Federation said. He was 40.

The federation said Eneramo "appeared to have suffered cardiac arrest five minutes into the second half" of the game, via the New York Post. He had played the entire first half of the match in Ungwan Yelwa, Kaduna, on Friday.

"This is devastating. I am short of words at this moment," NFF general secretary Mohammed Sanusi said in a statement.

Eneramo earned 10 caps for Nigeria and scored one international goal. He made his debut in February 2009 in a friendly against Jamaica and netted his first goal three months later against Ireland.

At club level, Eneramo was best known for his time with Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where he became a fan favorite and earned the nickname "The Tank." He helped the Tunisian club win multiple titles during a prolific stint.

He also played professionally in Turkey, featuring for clubs including Sivasspor, Be?ikta? and ?stanbul Ba?ak?ehir.

Eneramo had the option of representing Tunisia internationally during his club career there but chose to play for Nigeria.

The NFF said further details regarding the circumstances of his death were not immediately available.
