According to USA Today, basketball player Kareem Stagg was arrested by the Oconee County Sherrif's Office on April 8 at approximately 2:58 p.m. on charges of speeding and driving without a valid license. He was released on $1,245 bond just before 4 p.m.

According to the report, an officer monitoring traffic on 316 East at Dials Mill Road clocked Stagg driving 87 mph in a 65 mph zone in a 2023 Tesla Model Y.

When pulled over, the Georgia player reportedly said that he did not have his driver's license on him. He showed a driver's course certificate, which ultimately revealed that he only had a learner's permit. The law requires a licensed driver over the age of 21 to be in the vehicle with someone who only has a learner's permit.

"We are aware of the charges and are actively gathering additional information," Georgia athletics said in a statement after the arrest. "As this an ongoing legal matter, we will not be providing further comment at this time."

The SEC school has been the brunt of jokes in recent years due to the number of student-athletes being arrested or cited for vehicle-related incidents.

For example, linebackers Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnagbon were arrested in February. Athens-Clarke County police also charged Cole with misdemeanor reckless driving and Ikinnagbon with speeding, reckless driving, and following too closely.

Wide receiver Nitro Tuggle and offensive lineman Marques Easley were both suspended in March 2025 after police arrested Tuggle for speeding and reckless driving.

Standing at 6 feet, 8 inches and 220 pounds, the Virginia native appeared in 33 games as a freshman last season. He became a starter as the season progressed. He averaged 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds while making 50.5% of his attempted shots. The Bulldogs went 22-11.

Stagg is expected to return to the Georgia Bulldogs basketball team for the 2026-2027 season. He will join other returning contributors in guard Smurf Millender, guard Blue Cain, and forward Kanon Catchings.
