According to authorities, 18-year-old Jonathan Matos Morales, a former Braves minor league prospect, is accused of fleeing the scene of a deadly crash on Interstate 75 in Florida. Investigators say Morales was driving a black Ford Mustang when he struck a Chevy Trailblazer, setting off a chain reaction that ended with a semi-truck overturning.
The semi's driver, 34-year-old Owen Facey, a father of four, was killed at the scene.
Police allege Morales briefly stopped, then drove away. Hours later, the Braves reportedly recognized the vehicle at their spring training complex and contacted authorities. Troopers arrived and made an arrest soon after.
Morales now faces serious charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. He is being held on a $200,000 bond, with conditions that include supervised release and surrendering his passport if released.
The Braves confirmed Morales was previously part of their system and said they are cooperating fully with investigators while offering condolences to those affected.
Meanwhile, Facey's family is remembering him as a hero. His mother said he appeared to steer away from other vehicles in the final moments, a decision that may have prevented even more loss.
The investigation remains ongoing.
