This felt different.

After the Los Angeles Lakers were swept out of the second round of the NBA playoffs, LeBron James didn't give the usual clear-cut answer about what comes next.
"I don't know," he said when asked about his future, via ESPN.
That's where things stand right now.
James, 41, just wrapped up his 23rd season and is heading into the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. No guarantees. No firm plan. At least not publicly.
What he did say is telling.
He plans to step away, spend time with family and figure out whether he still wants to commit to everything the job requires. Not just the games. The entire routine. The early arrivals. The preparation. The daily grind.
For him, that's always been the key.
"If I'm still in love with the process," he said, essentially laying out the decision in simple terms.
On the court, he showed he can still do it.
James played heavy minutes in the playoff loss and remained productive, even after shifting into a different role late in the season. For stretches, he wasn't the top option. That's new territory. He handled it.
"I've never been a third option in my life," he said. Then added that he embraced it.
That says a lot about where he is in his career. There's also the bigger picture.
He has already accomplished everything. Titles. Records. Longevity that doesn't make sense. Still, the motivation to compete for another championship is there.
That hasn't changed. What happens next is less clear. Stay in Los Angeles. Go somewhere else. Or walk away.
Today, it seems, even LeBron doesn't have that answer.
