Former MLB Rookie of the Year Injured

Luis Gil, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, is dealing with another injury. He has been added to the injury list with shoulder inflammation.

According to SNY, Gil landed on the injured list earlier in the week. The New York Yankees do not expect the right-handed pitcher to throw again for three weeks. This puts the possible return timeline around June 1.

Gil had not been with the Yankees at the time of the injury. He had made four Major League starts this season while only striking out nine of the 85 batters he faced, but the team demoted him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The turning point for the former Rookie of the Year came against the Houston Astros in late April. Gil walked the first batter he faced, Carlos Correa, and then he surrendered a two-run home run to Christian Walker. The Yankees lost the game 7-4 and snapped an eight-game winning streak.

"He struggled to get swing-and-miss again," manager Aaron Boone said after the team demoted Gil. "He's just been struggling to get consistency with his delivery and fastball profile.

"A combination of not quite good enough command, the stuff not being as good as it is when Luis is at his very best — add that up, and you struggle to get that swing-and-miss."

The Dominican pitcher did not appear in a game for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the demotion. Now, his return to the field has been pushed back even further due to the shoulder inflammation and the spot on the injured list.

This is not the first injury sustained by the right-handed pitcher. He started the 2025 season on the 60-day injured list due to a high-grade right lat strain suffered in February 2025. The team had initially hoped to get him back into action by June 2025, but Gil did not make his return until August 2025.
