News of her death was shared Friday in a post on her Instagram account, which included a message reflecting her outlook throughout her illness: "Don't overthink things, just enjoy."
Michielsen emerged as a rising talent in Belgian cycling at a young age. In 2022, she won the Belgian national road title in the beginner category and also captured the national omnium championship. The following year, she added another national title by winning the Belgian time trial championship for second-year beginners.
Later in 2023, Michielsen was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. The diagnosis forced her to immediately end her cycling career.
After more than a year of treatment, there was hope she had recovered. But in March 2025, the cancer returned and was determined to be incurable.
Despite the setback, Michielsen publicly maintained an optimistic and determined outlook.
In an interview last year with Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, she acknowledged that additional chemotherapy would likely only extend her life temporarily, but said she still intended to "fight" and "get everything out of life."
Those close to the cycling community described Michielsen as courageous and positive throughout her illness, qualities that continued to define her even after her racing career ended.
Her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across Belgian cycling, where she had long been viewed as one of the sport's most promising young riders.
