Corey Day's Truck Flies During Wild Charlotte Crash

CONCORD, N.C. — The Sunday morning Craftsman Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway came to a halt in stage 2 due to a surprising sight. One truck went flying through the air.

The incident occurred as Corey Day raced in the sixth position. Day, who replaced Kyle Busch in the No. 7 Chevrolet after the NASCAR champion passed away, went to block a run by fellow driver Gio Ruggiero.

This block did not work. Day moved to the left, but he did not have enough room. His attempted block led to contact, which sent Day's truck spinning around. The No. 7 Chevrolet then flew up into the air while heading toward the inside SAFER barrier.

Day's truck landed back on all four tires before slamming into the barrier. It ricocheted back onto the racing surface and into the middle of the pack. Somehow, only Mini Tyrrell hit Day. The other drivers barely avoided an even bigger collision.

Neither Tyrrell nor Day could continue in the race. Both of their trucks sustained far too much damage. Tyrrell's Ram 1500, in particular, lost the left door panel. This exposed the vehicle's cockpit and presented a significant safety concern.

Speaking with Fox Sports after the crash and trip to the infield care center, Day said that his spotter had done nothing wrong in the incident. He said that he thought he was clear but that he ultimately was wrong.

This crash ended what had been a difficult weekend for Day and Spire Motorsports. He only took over the No. 7 Chevrolet after an announcement that Busch had been hospitalized with a severe illness. The family later announced that Busch had severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis and ultimately took his life.

Day had to take over the No. 7, which still had Busch's name on the rear window. He had to overcome the emotions and try to deliver a clean race for the late driver.

Ultimately, this did not happen as the crash led to an early exit from the race and a 34th-place finish.
