Jury selection has begun in the case against Anthony, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Austin Metcalf during a track and field event in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.

Prosecutors allege Anthony fatally stabbed Metcalf following a dispute between the two students at Kuykendall Stadium. According to authorities, the confrontation began after Metcalf asked Anthony to leave an area designated for his school's team.

Anthony's attorneys have said he acted in self-defense and have indicated they plan to present evidence supporting that claim during the trial.

Metcalf, who was 17 at the time of his death, was a student at Frisco Memorial High School. Anthony, then 17, attended Frisco Centennial High School.

The case drew widespread attention across the country following the fatal incident and generated significant discussion on social media. A legal defense fundraising campaign organized on behalf of Anthony's family raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to online records.

He was later released from custody on bond and remains under court-ordered restrictions while awaiting trial.

The proceedings come just weeks after Austin's twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, accepted diplomas on behalf of both himself and his late brother during graduation ceremonies at Memorial High School.

Because Anthony was a juvenile at the time of the alleged offense, he is not eligible for the death penalty under Texas law. If convicted of first-degree murder, he could face a lengthy prison sentence.

The trial is expected to focus heavily on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Anthony's claim that he acted in self-defense.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
