According to a California pastor who spoke with TMZ Sports, Smith spent part of Saturday delivering pizzas to homeless individuals in the San Jose area just hours before his death.
Smith, a former star pass-rusher for the San Francisco 49ers, was 36.
Pastor Scott Wagers, who works with The Mercy Mobile of Silicon Valley, said local business owner Amir Shirazi arrived with Smith and several pizzas as part of an effort to assist members of the area's homeless community.
Wagers told TMZ that Smith appeared friendly and engaged throughout the visit.
"Aldon was a very gentle, friendly guy," Wagers said. "Nothing seemed off other than maybe seeming a little tired."
According to Wagers, Shirazi later informed him that Smith had died only a few hours after helping distribute food and supplies.
The pastor said Shirazi told him the pair made several stops after the outreach event before returning to Shirazi's home. When Shirazi came back outside, he reportedly found Smith unresponsive in his vehicle.
Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the cause of death.
Smith was one of the NFL's most dominant young defenders during his early years with the 49ers. He recorded 33.5 sacks across his first two professional seasons and helped San Francisco reach Super Bowl XLVII following the 2012 campaign.
Smith's death remains under investigation.
