Alston, a father of two and former professional basketball player, was killed May 21 outside a business in Dolton, a south suburb of Chicago. He was 32.
Relatives and supporters packed a recent Dolton Village Board meeting, urging officials to provide more information about the investigation and questioning why a person initially detained in connection with the shooting was later released without charges.
Alston's parents spoke emotionally during the meeting, describing the pain of losing their son and their frustration with the pace of the investigation.
"We just want answers," family members said as they called for accountability and transparency, via ABC7 Chicago.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said in a statement that it had not yet been contacted by law enforcement to review the case for potential criminal charges.
"As in every case, prosecutors must evaluate all available evidence and consider the applicable laws to determine whether we can meet the legal standard for bringing criminal charges," the office said, adding that it remains open to reviewing information submitted by investigators.
Village officials said the Dolton Police Department has completed its investigation and forwarded its findings and evidence to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office for review.
In a statement, village officials said investigators conducted witness interviews, gathered evidence and consulted with prosecutors throughout the process.
"The Village of Dolton extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and all those affected by this tragedy," the statement said.
