Rory McIlroy didn't need to say a word to make his point.

The reigning Masters champion had a memorable exchange with a heckler during the U.S. Open after one fan repeatedly tried to get under his skin from the tee box.

As McIlroy prepared to begin his round alongside Maverick McNealy, a fan shouted, "Bunker! Get in the bunker!" while recording the moment on his phone, apparently hoping to capture a viral reaction.

The fan got one.

After hitting his shot and walking toward the fairway, McIlroy glanced back and responded with a silent gesture, using his hands to mimic a large belly before continuing on his way.

The exchange quickly spread across social media, where plenty of golf fans applauded McIlroy's quick-witted response.

According to another fan posting on Reddit, the same spectator had been shouting throughout the tournament, including during Wyndham Clark's eventual victory. The fan claimed the heckler repeatedly yelled things such as "Get in the water!" during players' shots.

McIlroy endured a frustrating week at Shinnecock Hills, finishing at 3-over par in a tie for 32nd while Clark captured the U.S. Open title after leading from start to finish.

The frustration wasn't limited to interactions with fans.

During Sunday's final round, television microphones picked up McIlroy criticizing himself after a poor shot on the third hole.

"Just go home, Rory ...," he muttered in frustration.

Still, it was his silent response to one particularly vocal spectator that became one of the tournament's most talked-about moments — proving you don't always need words to win an exchange with a heckler.
