According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Boston has agreed to trade the former NBA Finals MVP to the rival Philadelphia 76ers in one of the biggest moves of the offseason.
The Celtics will receive veteran forward Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round selections in return.
Brown had quietly become one of the NBA's hottest trade names in recent weeks after Boston unsuccessfully attempted to package him in a deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Once that opportunity disappeared, the Celtics reportedly intensified efforts to find another blockbuster.
They found one in Philadelphia.
Brown now joins a 76ers team built around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, giving Philadelphia another proven All-Star as it looks to challenge for the Eastern Conference crown.
The move also reunites Brown with a division rival that eliminated Boston from the playoffs this past season.
Brown leaves the Celtics after a decade with the franchise that drafted him third overall in 2016. During that span, he developed into one of the league's premier two-way wings, earning five All-Star selections while helping Boston capture its 18th NBA championship in 2024.
He's also coming off arguably the best season of his career.
The 29-year-old averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists while earning All-NBA Second Team honors and finishing sixth in MVP voting.
For Boston, the return is significant.
George gives the Celtics another accomplished veteran capable of contributing immediately, while the additional draft capital provides flexibility as the franchise begins reshaping its roster following the failed pursuit of Antetokounmpo.
According to ESPN, Philadelphia is sending unprotected first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, along with two second-round selections, to complete the deal.
One thing is certain: the rivalry between the Celtics and 76ers just became a whole lot more interesting.
