The Wednesday actress has been cast in Nasty, an upcoming sports drama centered on a gifted young gymnast fighting for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
According to Deadline, Ortega will star alongside Oscar nominee Rose Byrne in the film, which is scheduled to begin production this fall for Warner Bros.
The movie follows a rising gymnastics star whose toughest challenge isn't the competition on the mat, but her own coach.
Mary Bronstein will direct the project from a screenplay by Isabella Jarosz. The script previously earned recognition by landing on the 2024 Black List, an annual survey of Hollywood's most-liked unproduced screenplays.
Ortega is also producing the film alongside LuckyChap, the production company co-founded by actress Margot Robbie.
The role continues Ortega's run as one of Hollywood's fastest-rising stars. She earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Netflix's Wednesday and recently starred in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which grossed more than $450 million worldwide.
Byrne, meanwhile, is coming off an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Bronstein's If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, making Nasty a reunion between the actress and director.
With Ortega leading the cast and the Olympic backdrop providing plenty of built-in drama, Nasty is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing sports films currently in development.
