According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is expected to receive full medical clearance this week as Kansas City opens training camp.
Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL during Week 15 last season and underwent surgery in December, leaving plenty of questions about whether he'd be ready for the start of the 2026 campaign.
Those concerns now appear to be fading.
The two-time NFL MVP was already participating in portions of the Chiefs' offseason program, taking part in individual drills and 7-on-7 work while wearing a non-contact jersey. Kansas City kept him out of full-team drills as a precaution but continued increasing his workload through mandatory minicamp.
If Breer's report holds true, Mahomes will soon take another major step by facing defenders for the first time since the injury.
Chiefs quarterbacks are scheduled to report to training camp on Friday, giving Mahomes the opportunity to continue ramping up for the regular season.
Kansas City is expected to have Justin Fields, Chris Oladokun and rookie Garrett Nussmeier competing for reps behind Mahomes during camp, though the biggest storyline will undoubtedly be watching the franchise quarterback return from the most significant injury of his career.
The Chiefs will likely continue to manage Mahomes' workload throughout camp and the preseason, but all signs point toward him being ready when the games begin to count again.
