An NFL head coach is recovering after reportedly sustaining significant injuries in an offseason car crash.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a crash near his Northern California home. He reportedly collided with an SUV.
His injuries reportedly included a severe concussion, a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand. Schefter reported that Shanahan needed 40 stitches after the July 14 accident.
Palo Alto Lieutenant Nicholas Martinez told ESPN that the driver of the SUV did not sustain any injuries. He said that drugs and alcohol were not involved in this incident and that authorities did it not issue citations to either driver.
Shanahan continues to recover at his home, but he will remain limited as training camp begins on Sunday. He will wait to be cleared of concussion symptoms. The 49ers have said that assistant head coach/offensive line coach Chris Foerster will assume head coaching duties.
"San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries," the team said in a statement. "Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers.
"Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care. Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster along with team coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities during this period."
Shanahan, 46, has been the head coach of the 49ers since the 2017 season. He has led the team to an 82-67 record in the regular season and a 9-5 record in the playoffs.
The 49ers have reached the Super Bowl two times (2019, 2023) under Shanahan. They lost to the Chiefs on both occasions.
Prior to joining the 49ers, Shanahan served as offensive coordinator for multiple teams. This includes the Texans (2008-09), Commanders (2010-13), Browns (2014), and Falcons (2015-16). The Falcons reached the Super Bowl, and Matt Ryan won NFL MVP while working with Shanahan.
