According to his obituary, Cline died Friday following a battle with cancer.
A standout at McAdory High School, Cline played at Alabama from 1978 to 1982, helping the Crimson Tide win two national championships early in his career. He earned second-team All-SEC honors as a senior while starting on Bryant's final Alabama team.
Cline went on to play professionally for seven seasons, beginning with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL before spending time in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions.
After his playing career ended, Cline returned home to Alabama, where he owned and operated Greenpond Grocery for more than 30 years.
His obituary said football was only part of the legacy he leaves behind.
"His greatest victories were measured not by statistics or championships, but by the character he displayed every day," the obituary read.
Cline is also remembered for his determination during his fight with cancer.
"Even in the face of life's greatest challenges, he demonstrated remarkable strength, dignity, and faith," the obituary said.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Vicki, along with two children, four grandchildren and other family members.
While Cline enjoyed success on the football field at Alabama and in the pros, those closest to him said it was the way he lived his life away from the game that will be remembered most.
