Things got heated in a hurry at T-Mobile Park on Wednesday night.

The Mariners and Tigers cleared the benches in the eighth inning after Seattle reliever Gabe Speier drilled Gleyber Torres. Speier and manager Dan Wilson both got tossed. Nobody threw a punch, but the bad blood was obvious.
By the time it was over, four Tigers had been hit by pitches. Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh took one himself in the bottom of the seventh.

Bryan Woo started for Seattle and somehow threw seven scoreless innings while plunking three Detroit hitters. That hasn't happened since Yu Darvish did it in 2022.
After Torres got smoked, he and Raleigh got right in each other's faces. Tigers manager AJ Hinch had to come out and pull Torres away before things escalated further.

Torres told reporters this all traces back to their series in April. That's when Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor got hit in the back by Keider Montero after Naylor crashed into Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle at first and appeared to toss his sliding mitt at catcher Dillon Dingler on the way home. Naylor then slid hard into second for good measure.
"I really believe whatever happened at home with Naylor and everything, I think they just got feelings before," Torres said. "But this is baseball, and I don't have any issues. Like I said, they protect Raleigh, and that's what it is. I'm good."

Hinch saw it similarly.
"I think the back-to-back pitches in a weird spot to Gleyber, one of them smoking him, created a lot of emotions," Hinch said. "We all end up on the field, umpires met and deemed it intentional enough to throw him out. I know it came right after Cal got smoked, which is what makes it a little uncomfortable for everybody."
The two teams wrap up the series Thursday afternoon. Framber Valdez gets the ball for Detroit. Last time these clubs met, Valdez was caught laughing in the dugout after Naylor got drilled. Should be another fun one.
