Tua Tagovailoa wasn't the only member of the family making football headlines this summer.

His younger brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships, leading American Samoa to a stunning 38-32 victory over the United States in Düsseldorf, Germany.
It wasn't merely another loss for Team USA.
It was the Americans' first defeat in World Championship competition since 2012, ending a 14-year unbeaten streak.
Tagovailoa, the former Maryland quarterback, was outstanding. He completed 29 of 36 passes for 213 yards and five touchdowns against the defending world champions.
American Samoa trailed 13-12 during the first half before scoring on both sides of halftime to build a 26-13 advantage.
The United States responded, but Tagovailoa connected on two more deep touchdown passes to help American Samoa finish the upset.
As it turned out, the loss served as quite the wake-up call. Team USA recovered to beat Australia 40-7 later in group play, then survived close knockout-round games against Japan and Mexico before crushing Italy 46-26 in the championship game.
The Americans ultimately captured their sixth consecutive world title, with Darrell "Housh" Doucette III earning tournament MVP honors.
Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, and the United States is already qualified as the host nation.
So Taulia Tagovailoa didn't stop Team USA from becoming world champion.
But for one game in Germany, Tua's little brother did something nobody had managed in 14 years.
