BRISTOL, Tenn. — Christopher Bell is extremely motivated as he returns to Bristol Motor Speedway for Saturday night's race. This is about far more than just adding another sword to his collection.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver wants redemption after mistakes took him out of contention for the win in the spring race.
"Yeah, just reading through my notes, the last sentence of my notes for the spring race was, 'Man, I can't wait to go back,'" Bell told media members on Friday at Bristol.
"The spring race a couple of months ago was probably one of my best cars I've ever had at Bristol. That thing was just awesome, and I made a mistake. So I have had this one circled for a while to come back and redeem myself.
"I love this racetrack," Bell added. "Whether I have a good car, bad car, good race, bad race, it's just a lot of fun to make laps here. It's a lot of fun to race here, so I've very, very much been looking forward to this one."
It was a tale of two races for Bell and the No. 20 team during the spring race at Bristol Motor Speedway, which teammate Ty Gibbs won.
The team had considerable speed, which it used to race through the field after taking the green flag in the 14th position.
Bell worked his way up to second place by the end of the opening stage, and he scored nine crucial points. He then headed to pit road with the goal of scoring even more points in the second stage.
This trip down pit road is when everything went awry for Bell. NASCAR nabbed him for speeding, which dropped him out of second place. This marked his first speeding penalty of the season and his first ever in a Cup Series race at Bristol.

Bell restarted the second stage outside of the top 25, and he immediately began trying to work his way through the field. However, another problem occurred as he spun on his own on Lap 144.
The veteran driver avoided wrecking the No. 20 Toyota Camry, but he fell further back in the field. He restarted last in the field before going on to finish stage 2 in the 33rd position.
The rest of the 505-lap race featured Bell just logging laps. He fell from two laps down to four laps down as the race progressed, and he ended the day in the 27th position despite previously having one of the two fastest cars in the field.
This spring race at Bristol is one that Bell could have won. He had the car and handling he needed; he just needed to avoid mistakes to give himself a chance to contend with Kyle Larson, Gibbs, and other drivers in the top five.
The speeding penalty and the spin prevented this from happening, and they prolonged Bell's winless streak. But six months later, he has a chance at redemption. He can try to win the Bristol Night Race for the second consecutive season and keep himself in contention for the Cup Series championship.
