Marist Catholic fired its head coach after the Spartans attempted two onside kicks during an Oct. 9 blowout of Cottage Grove, including one while leading 57-0 late in the second quarter, according to KVAL.
With 1:47 remaining before halftime, Marist sent the kick toward the right sideline. It went out of bounds, resulting in a penalty. The game was called at halftime because of the lopsided score.
Principal Bob Fraley informed parents that LoBoy's removal was effective immediately.
"Following Friday's game against Cottage Grove, we determined that a change in leadership was necessary to reflect our school's mission and values," Fraley wrote in an email obtained by KVAL.
Footage also showed Marist recovering an earlier onside kick, although the score at that point was not visible.
Cottage Grove entered the aftermath of the loss at 1-5, having dropped five consecutive games by a combined 206-36. Marist improved to 3-3, but the result quickly became secondary to how the Spartans handled an already overwhelming lead.
Jake Lowther will take over the program, with his first game as head coach scheduled for Friday at North Bend.
"We are confident that Jake will provide the leadership and guidance our student-athletes need," Fraley wrote. "Our priority is to support our players, maintain a positive team environment, and help the team finish the season strong."
Winning by nine touchdowns usually gives a coach something to celebrate. At Marist, the decisions made along the way cost LoBoy his job.
