He wasn't really, but he may as well have been. This experiment, performed for the "Life on the Line" series is "conducted without any other safety than what appears in the videos." So the guy standing there with just swim trunks in front of a high powered rifle is 100 percent factual and according to the video's description:
It's harder to create movement in water than in air, because water molecules are closer together than air molecules. To show the difference in resistance, physicist Andreas Wahl puts himself in front of a weapon submerged in water and fires it - on himself.
I'm a huge fan of science, physics in particular, so the premise of the experiment makes total sense. Just don't expect me—or anyone else with common sense—to go diving in front of bullets for "science."
