Birtwell died suddenly, leaving teammates, coaches, and an entire baseball community in shock. He had pitched for the team during the 2025 season before continuing his college career at Sacred Heart University in 2026.

For those who knew him, the loss is hard to process.

"We're all just in a state of shock," Vermont manager Matt Fincher said. "It's not something you would ever anticipate hearing about a college athlete. I'm really sad for his family. We're gonna miss him."

Right now, there are still unanswered questions. A cause of death has not been released.

But what has been clear is the outpouring of support.

Birtwell's current and former teams both shared emotional tributes, remembering not just the pitcher, but the person behind the uniform. Sacred Heart described his impact as something that reached far beyond the field.

Those who played alongside him said the same.

Messages poured in from friends and teammates, calling him dedicated, supportive, and someone who truly loved the game. One described him as "the best friend I could have asked for."

That seems to be the common theme.

More than stats. More than innings pitched.

Birtwell is being remembered for how he made people feel.

A memorial service is being planned on campus as the community comes together to honor his life.
