According to a press release, the crash occurred on the morning of Feb. 11. The Iowa State Patrol said that the Iowa Lakes Community College bus went off the road on Highway 4 near Twin Lakes in Calhoun County. It overturned in a ditch.

Thirty-three people were on board the bus. Those injured were transported to various hospitals in the area via either air or ground ambulance. CKRG reported that the 74-year-old driver over-corrected while they went off the road. This sent the bus into the ditch.

Two people were ejected and then trapped under the bus as it rolled over. Student-athletes traveling in a follow van stopped and attempted CPR on Johnson, a freshman. He passed away at the scene of the crash.

"Carter was a great teammate, a friend, and a valued member of our athletic community," Iowa Lakes Community College's athletic director Troy Larson said in a statement.

"We're heartbroken for this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Carter's family, we cannot imagine the depth of their loss, and we are holding them close in our hearts."

Iowa Lakes Community College canceled classes in the wake of the tragic crash, but it kept the campus open for students who wished to speak to counselors.

The Iowa Lakes baseball team has been inactive since the tragic bus crash. However, they will return to action on Friday, March 13, with a game at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They will face off with Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range.

"Our players love this game, and they love competing for each other," head coach Chris Witzke said, per We Are Iowa.

"We are taking things one day at a time, supporting one another, and honoring those impacted by the accident every step of the way. When we take the field, we do it as a family and with the incredible support of the Iowa Lakes community behind us."
