Freshman standout Jesse Rusinek was arrested on March 2 and charged with DWI involving an open container, per the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Police took the 19-year-old into custody and later released him from the Lubbock County Detention Center.
Now the focus shifts to what comes next.
Rusinek has been one of Texas Tech's most productive hitters so far this season. He's batting .435 with one home run, eight runs scored, and seven RBIs. He's also added three doubles as part of a strong start at the plate.
On the mound, his role has been limited. Rusinek has made just a couple of appearances with a 6.75 ERA across 2.2 innings. He was still listed on the team's official roster when outlets first reported on his arrest.
Texas Tech acknowledged the situation in a statement, saying the school is aware of the incident and is continuing to gather information before determining any internal discipline.
"Texas Tech was made aware Monday morning of an incident with one of its baseball student-athletes," the statement read. "At this time, we continue to gather facts regarding the matter and will determine any discipline internally consistent with the Texas Tech student-athlete code of conduct."
For now, it's a developing situation.
And a promising season for one of the team's top young players just hit an unexpected pause.
