Redford's career spanned more than six decades, with classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and All the President's Men cementing his place in film history. But for sports fans, his defining role came in 1984 when he stepped into the batter's box as Roy Hobbs in The Natural.

The movie, adapted from Bernard Malamud's novel, follows Hobbs' remarkable and at times tragic baseball journey. Shot and left for dead early in his career, Hobbs resurfaces years later with the fictional New York Knights and quickly becomes a sensation.

The story builds to one of the most iconic moments in sports cinema: Hobbs, weakened by injury and down to his final strike, launches a towering home run that shatters the stadium lights. Sparks rain across the field as Hobbs rounds the bases, an image that remains one of baseball's most replayed Hollywood highlights.

While the book ends on a darker note — Hobbs strikes out and faces disgrace after briefly considering a bribe — Redford's film version delivered a more uplifting conclusion. That choice drew mixed reviews from critics but helped secure The Natural as a fan favorite.

Redford's portrayal of Hobbs, bat in hand and sparks flying overhead, may not have won him an Oscar. But it won a permanent place in baseball lore, right alongside the real legends of the game.
