The incident occurred around 11 a.m. local time on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria, per ESPN. The Ogun State Police Command told the outlet that Joshua was in the backseat of a Lexus SUV when the tire burst.

This tire issue caused the driver of the SUV to lose control and swerve into a stationary, 18-wheel truck parked on the side of the road.

Photos taken at the site of the accident did not show the Lexus, but they provided a look at the damage to the rear of the 18-wheeler.

"The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated," the Ogun State Police Command said in a statement.

"He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention. Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene."

Joshua had returned to Nigeria after a high-profile trip to Miami. On Dec. 20, the former heavyweight champion faced off with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a match at the Kaseya Center that last six of the scheduled eight rounds.

Joshua scored a sixth-round knockout with his right hand after landing multiple other shots that knocked his opponent to the mat. Paul later revealed with a post on social media that he had undergone surgery to repair a jaw broken in two places.

"Life is much more important than boxing," Paul wrote on Monday after learning of the car crash in Nigeria. "I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today's unfortunate accident."

Paul later identified the two victims in the crash, writing, "RIP Sina Ghami and Kevin 'Latif / Latz' Ayodele. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends and AJ."
