Tyger Campbell is a five-star point guard in the class of 2019, or at least he was until he decided to reclassify and make his commitment all at once. The 5'11", 160-pound guard out of Iowa wasn't being heavily recruited by the powerhouses like Kentucky, Duke, Kansas or UNC yet since he was only getting ready to be a junior next year, which probably explains how he ended up making his commitment to the school he did.
ESPN recruiting guru Jeff Borzello explains in depth exactly how it all went down, but basically Campbell felt most comfortable at DePaul despite the Blue Demons really having no history of excellence when it comes to basketball. He took an unofficial visit to the campus over the weekend and apparently that was enough to seal the deal.
DePaul also recently hired Shane Heirman as an assistant coach. Heirman was Campbell's coach at La Lumiere School (Indiana) the past two seasons so that surely played a role as well. The recruitment came down to UNLV, Michigan State, Alabama and Tennessee for Campbell. None of those are traditional powerhouses except for MSU, but there's nothing quite like going to play for a coach you're already familiar with.
Campbell is ranked as the No. 25 player in the country for the class of 2019 —- so that is likely to change since he reclassified —- by ESPN and the No. 4 point guard in the country.
