Iowa defensive back arrested and charged for drunk driving Sunday morning

The University of Iowa has issued a statement on the matter.

Iowa redshirt freshman defensive back Omar Truitt was arrested and charged with drunk driving early Sunday morning. According to the Iowa City Press-Citizen, Truitt was pulled over at an intersection around 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning. According to the Iowa City police complaint, after the officer allegedly smelled alcohol, Pruitt took a blood alcohol test and registered a .091, which is in fact over the legal limit of .08.

Given that this is Truitt's first arrest for drunken driving, it is classified as a serious misdemeanor, and he could see up to a year in prison if convicted.

A University of Iowa Athletics Department press release Monday released a statement regarding the events.

"UI athletics department officials are in the process of gathering facts in regards to the incident. Truitt is subject to established university protocol in regards to the UI student life code of conduct and team rules and regulations set for members of the football program," UI officials said in a press release Monday obtained by the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

Truitt was redshirted in 2014 and did not record any stats for Iowa in 2015. Per the newspaper who broke the story, Truitt is not currently in jail and does not have a mugshot.
