The university said Hughes died May 1.
Hughes played for the Ramblers from 1981 to 1985 and was named an Associated Press All-American in his senior season. He was a three-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and led Loyola to an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance in 1985.
He remains the program's career scoring leader with 2,914 points, a total that ranks among the top scorers in NCAA history. Hughes also holds school records for field goals made and attempted and ranks among the program's leaders in rebounds and steals.
Loyola athletic director Steve Watson said Hughes was "an all-time great" who remained closely connected to the program after his playing career.
Hughes was selected in the first round of the 1985 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs and appeared in 68 games as a rookie.
His No. 21 jersey was later retired by Loyola, and he was inducted into the school's athletics hall of fame.
Hughes continued to support the program in the years that followed, frequently attending games and interacting with players and coaches.
