Former five-star Malik Newman made a puzzling decision when he decided to commit to in-state school Mississippi State. Many people thought he could be a potential one-and-done player if he went to the right program. Most people agreed that Miss State was not that.

It seems that Newman finally understands that too and wants a release so that he can transfer elsewhere.
He will have to wait a year per NCAA transfer rules, but hopefully will be able to make an impact wherever he decides to go. Newman was injured for the first few weeks of the season and it is pretty hard to learn a new system when you don't get to play in it to start the season. He averaged only 11.3 points, 2.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 0.4 steals per game while shooting an atrocious 39.1 percent from the floor and a solid 37.9 percent from beyond the arc.
