UCLA was so bad that the coach is actually returning a contract extension

I don't think this has ever been done before.

UCLA basketball had a pretty bad season going 15-17 and finishing 10th in the Pac 12 for the first time in the school's history. Coach Steve Alford has returned the one-year contract extension he signed in 2014 that would have kept him on campus until 2021.

Alford let UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero know that he had put in the paperwork to have the extension rescinded. Extensions are usually for guys who earn it by leading their teams to victory and Alford felt that wasn't his case so he showed some incredible integrity and wants the chance to earn the extension back.

"At the end of the day, year three was clearly not up to UCLA standards. My coaching staff and I fell short not only of our own expectations, but the expectations of Dan, the Chancellor and you, our fans. As a coaching staff, we intend to earn that extension back."

Alford went 50-23 and reached the Sweet 16 twice in his first two seasons as Bruins coach. The Bruins did have a brutal schedule, but going under .500 is just not an option for this team.
