According to reports and police records, at 11:15 pm Saturday night in Houston, Texas, a call was made in regard to a disturbance that included Lacy getting into a verbal argument with a family member, which then escalated to him firing a weapon into the ground before fleeing the scene (per TMZ).

Reportedly, law enforcement identified Lacy's vehicle and attempted to pull him over, but rather a police pursuit ensued.

Lacy's car ended up crashing, and when police approached they discovered him dead, which was described in the police report as a result of "what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Officers say they recovered a handgun from the vehicle, but at this time the official cause of death has not been released by the medical examiner.

In view of the tragedy, LSU released a statement: "We're saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing."

To note, back on December 17, Lacy was accused of causing a car crash, in a hit-and-run situation, which took the life of a 78-year-old former marine.

After initially fleeing the scene without rendering aid or calling authorities, Lacy turned himself in on January 13, while facing negligent homicide charges, he was released from jail on $151,000 bail.

Yet, Lacy's attorney was confident that he would have been exonerated and had a future in the NFL, as he released a statement on Sunday following the alleged fatal suicide tragedy.

"Kyren was scheduled to have his matter heard before a grand jury tomorrow wherein we were very confident the evidence, after being fully collected and reviewed, would lead to a declination of charges."

Notably, Lacy was projected as a potential first-round draft pick after declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft and taking part in LSU's pro day in March; he was ranked by analyst Mel Kiper Jr. as a Top-6 wide receiver prospect.

Lacy spent three seasons at LSU, prior to starting his career at Louisiana, and had his best year in 2024 with 58 catches for 866 yards to go with a team-leading nine receiving touchdowns.

Kenny Lacy, Kyren's father released a statement on social media, urging parents to check on their kid's mental health.

"Young parents, start talking to your kids at a very early age and make sure they are confident and comfortable confiding in you. Don't be cool with "I'm Alright, or I'm good" when you know deep down something isn't right. Mental Health is real, and for the most part, it's invisible. Don't ignore the signs, even if they may seem small."

He continued, "Our lives have changed forever, and this will never be ok, but God needed my baby more than he was needed here. This has to be the biggest pill our families have had to swallow but I know the love and compassion in our families will get us through. This will never get easier, but we'll learn to live with it."
