A former college football player has been shot dead under mysterious circumstances

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Former Alcorn State wide receiver Tollette 'Tonka' George was fatally shot in Algiers, Louisiana on Friday night. That's the neighborhood in New Orleans where their police department responded to a call about for aggravated battery near a shooting around Vespasian Street and Lauradale Drive.

Upon getting to the scene, officers noticed an unidentified man — who ended up being George — with multiple gunshot wounds lying on the street. George was pronounced dead at the scene.

George was a standout at Edna Karr High School in New Orleans before graduating in 2011. He then played for five years as a receiver at Alcorn State. Alcorn is part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which mourned George on it website Saturday.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
