A Nebraska coach has been sentenced to 30 days in jail

There are better places to be for 30 days.

Nebraska wide receivers coach Keith Williams has a history when it comes to running afoul of the law in one particular way. In August, the 45-year-old assistant was arrested for DUI in Lincoln and, while that is an ugly situation in and of itself, it was the third such arrest for Williams.

As a result, Williams was quickly suspended without pay by head coach Mike Riley, and while Williams returned to work weeks later, that initial suspension with a four-game absence at the outset of the 2017 season. On Thursday, the Lincoln Journal-Star brought word that Williams has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and his history reportedly played a part in the ruling.

Prosecutors asked that he do the time in jail rather than house arrest, noting that he did not serve jail time on previous drunken-driving convictions. The judge also revoked Williams' driver's license for five years, but he'll be able to drive with an ignition interlock.

Frankly, this still seems light given the history of behavior and the report also indicates that Williams can apply for house arrest before actually entering jail in early March. The report also shares that Williams has spent 30 hours in counseling for substance abuse since the arrest, though, so it appears he could be taking steps to remedy this in the future.

Nebraska will be without an assistant for four games but, in short, this could have been far worse.
