Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines suffered a rash of de-commitments in mid-August and one of those losses came in the form of 2018 offensive lineman Jalil Irvin. The four-star prospect from Georgia was a (very) early commitment to the Wolverines for that future class, and Irvin explained his reasoning in a recent interview.
Josh Newkirk of Scout brings word from Irvin and it appears that Michigan may have backed off when it comes to Irvin:
"The major reason was a lack of communication. I haven't talked to the coaches in two months. I was thinking, 'Why would I stay committed here, when I haven't heard from them in two months?' So I decommitted and I picked up two offers the same day actually."
It makes all the sense in the world that Irvin would feel un-loved by Michigan after that prolonged absence, but given the duration between and 2018 signing day, it also could point to prioritization from the Wolverines. Though Irvin does rank as a four-star prospect according to a few major recruiting services, he isn't the type of recruit that would automatically stick with Michigan through thick and thin, and it is possible that Harbaugh's crew elected to spend their time elsewhere willingly.
Jalil Irvin still speaks quite highly of Michigan at this stage, but perhaps this amicable split is the best thing for both parties.
