CBS Sports' top college athletic program will add fuel to a major rivalry fire

Whoa.

Rivalry games in all sports are important, but there was one in particular that took on a different meaning this year. It was all because CBS Sports decided to name its top college athletic program of the year and it came down to two of the biggest rivals in sports. They had Florida State just edging out Florida for the title of "Best in College Sports" for the 2016-17 academic year.

FSU got major bonus points for a good NCAA Tournament from its women's basketball team as well as a 10-3 football season that included an Orange Bowl victory over Michigan that saw them finish the season with the No. 8 ranking in the sport. Baseball also made an unbelievable to the College World Series while softball got to the Super Regional.

Florida women's basketball's inability to make the postseason is ultimately what cost them despite an Elite Eight run by the men's team and a national title from both baseball and women's tennis. The softball team also got to the Women's College World Series, but it wasn't enough as the point total came out to be FSU's 491.25 against Florida's 489.75.

CBS Sports weighs each sport differently than the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) does as that system weighs every sport equally. CBS Sports added extra weight to football and men's basketball, which certainly helped FSU.
