Derrick Brooks 'totally shocked' at the moment his son knew where he was going to school

Looks like the legend had nothing to do with the decision.

Florida State was getting some good bloodlines in 2017 recruit DeCalon Brooks as he's the son of legendary linebacker Derrick Brooks. He's ranked as a three-star recruit, but he comes from a five-star legacy so that should certainly help him out getting some playing time on the field.

However, Derrick didn't always know that his son would become a Seminole like him. The NFL Hall of Famer and 11-time Pro Bowler told ESPN's Rusillo and Kanell that his job was "just to make sure that all his questions got answered in an honest manner, for me basically see through the BS." He didn't have any input and he told the story about when DeCalon made his decision and knew where he wanted to go.

"I was totally shocked when he came to me this past August and said, 'Dad, I know where I want to go.' I said alright, go in there and tell your mom and make sure all of your questions get answered and then come back and tell me. He did and I said what school do you want to go to and he said 'Florida State'.

The elder Brooks was of course proud and he made it quite clear that DeCalon is his own man and wasn't going to back off his decision.

"I will tell you, it was tough to stay committed to that because other schools didn't give up, but he held through and [Wednesday] was special kind of seeing my son get an opportunity to pursue his dreams as a student-athlete obviously at Florida State."

The younger Brooks is a 5'11", 197-pound inside linebacker who will surely be working his butt off to get into the defensive rotation with some bigger and stronger guys likely to get a lot of playing time.
