A new era begins at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys and head coach Mike Gundy have parted ways after a 1-2 start to the season, which includes a 69-3 loss to Oregon.

This change is effective immediately, and it takes place one day after he said he wanted to stay at the program. The team did not announce who will serve as the interim coach for the rest of the 2025 college football season.
"Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy's leadership," OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg said in a statement.
"I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football."
Gundy began his Oklahoma State tenure as a player. He suited up as quarterback from 1986-89. He threw for 7,997 yards and 54 touchdowns in 42 games as a starter while leading the Big 8 conference in multiple seasons.
As a coach, Gundy led the football team to 170 wins. This includes at least 10 wins in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2023. He took the Cowboys to 18 bowl games in 20 full seasons as a head coach, and he won the Big 12 championship in 2011.
Times have changed, however, with the NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals and the Transfer Portal in college football. Teams could now woo top talent from all over the country, and these players could easily switch schools.
Oklahoma State only won three games last season. Its only win this season came in the opening week against FCS program Tennessee-Martin. Next up is Baylor on Saturday.
"College football has changed drastically in the last few years, and the investment needed to compete at the highest level has never been more important," Weiberg added. "As we search for the next head coach of Cowboy Football, we are looking for someone who can lead our program in this new era.
"It is also important that we continue to support our student-athletes, our staff and our university through the season, and I hope that our fans continue to show that support in Boone Pickens Stadium this fall.
"Moving forward, it is critical for our fans, alumni and donors to align behind Cowboy Football. This is a pivotal moment, the stakes have never been higher and we need everyone on board."
