The Big 12 is a crazy and incredibly unpredictable conference. This is the same conference that initially denied its star quarterback Baker Mayfield an extra year of eligibility only to turn around the next day and end up giving it to him anyway. With no warning, the conference also decided to add a conference championship game despite never having been able to do that because it only had 10 members.

During its media days, the Big 12 dropped the bomb that it was considering expansion which was met with mixed reviews from its athletic directors. There were some that absolutely wanted to add two more schools and there were some that like their intimate —- if poorly named —- conference of 10 teams.

It seems a decision has been reached and the fate of about 12 schools has been determined.
There were several candidates to enter the conference like South Florida, Houston, Colorado State, Central Florida, UConn among many others. The president of FOX Sports is against expansion as he believes it will dilute the product and it would ultimately require a retooling of the television agreements. Something to consider is that ESPN currently holds TV deals with the AAC, Mountain West, and BYU, meaning it already owns broadcast rights to games by all the candidates.

There were rumors that the Big 12 expansion would be tabled as well for another time and to be taken under consideration at a later date and it looks like those rumors were right. The conference still has a news conference called for 5:30 p.m., but may not need it if the news continues to get out.
