The Texas Longhorns are going to pay Tom Herman's $2.5 million buyout as is common practice nowadays. However, they could have avoided paying it if they had just agreed to do one thing with Houston.

Cougars athletic director Hunter Yurachek confirmed to the Houston Chronicle that he had offered to offset the $2.5 million buyout in exchange for a home-and-home series in football as well as one in basketball. The two schools haven't played each other in football since 2002 and basketball has been an even longer drought.

That seems like a pretty easy deal and a no-brainer. If you're Texas, you avoid actually paying the buyout and you should get a couple of easy wins down the road with many of your fans in attendance at either venue in either sport.
"At this point there does not appear to be an interest from Texas," Yurachek told the Chronicle. "It's not an option that is on the table any longer."
Herman's deal is worth $30 million over five years before incentives and the buyout has to be paid in full to Houston by Jan. 27 of 2017.
