Tom Herman bluntly comments on the depth with his new squad at Texas

Tom Herman wasn't shy about his QB situation at Big 12 Media Days.

Tom Herman inherited a Texas program that has struggled at the quarterback position for several years.

Herman was asked about depth at the position at Big 12 Media Days, and his assessment was short, but candid.

"There isn't any," Herman said Tuesday.

The Longhorns return sophomore starter Shane Buechele, and behind him is four-star true freshman Sam Ehlinger. Beyond that, apparently the Longhorns don't have much to offer at the quarterback position.

If Buechele and Ehlinger were injured, wide receiver Jerrod Heard would take over at QB. Heard played quarterback during his freshman season in 2015, but he moved to WR last year. Herman said he will have a package for Heard each week either way.

Buechele displayed flashes of his ability as a true freshman, but consistency was an issue for him. He threw for 2,958 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season.

Herman praised Buechele's work ethic, and he will likely be the starter when Texas takes on Maryland to start the 2017 season.

Herman isn't pleased about the Longhorns' depth at the position, but he won't be able to address the issue until next offseason.
