Less than an hour before kickoff, the Spartans received a commitment from 2019 four-star dual-threat quarterback Dwan Mathis, who announced his decision via Twitter.
Mathis ranks as the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback and No. 237 overall prospect for the 2019 national recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
The 6-foot-5, 196-pound junior, decommitted from Iowa State in June and received an official scholarship offer from Michigan State three weeks later. Mathis chose the Spartans over offers from Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Kentucky and several others.
Michigan State now has two commitments for its 2019 class, which also includes four-star offensive tackle Spencer Brown. The Spartans currently have 15 commitments for their 2018 class, which ranks No. 15 nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
