This is the worst targeting call of the year and it isn't close

What else was he supposed to do?

This is just terrible.

Penn State linebacker Brandon Smith was ejected for above hit on Saturday against Michigan due to a targeting penalty. Yes, even after review, the call was upheld.

Smith does make contact with Michigan receiver Grant Perry's helmet, but here's the problem with the targeting call: there was absolutely no intent on Smith's part. He — like Perry — was going for the ball and all contact was incidental.

You can't be throwing players out of games for this. The onus always seems unfairly on the defensive player on plays like this, and it's not right that Penn State loses a defender just because he was going for the ball.
