The Ohio State football program is a juggernaut of the highest order and that is largely due to the stellar work of Urban Meyer and his coaching staff. However, the football-only personnel is strongly supported by the administration and deputy athletic director Martin Jarmond is a big part of that.
On Wednesday, Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated reported that Jarmond is likely on his way out of town, though, as he is in line to be named the next athletic director at Boston College. At 37 years old, Jarmond is seen as a rising star in the industry and Thamel shines more light on his credentials.
Jarmond is well known in athletics circles as Gene Smith's trusted top lieutenant. He's been regarded highly enough that he got long looks at recent openings at both Syracuse and Mississippi State. He was recently named one of the Forty Under 40 by the Sports Business Journal. Jarmond would become the youngest athletic director at the Power 5 level.
While this is not a direct loss for the on-field product at Ohio State, it certainly isn't ideal for Meyer and the program to be losing someone of this youth and stature. It will be interesting to see what kind of behind-the-scenes impact this defection leaves in Columbus but one thing seems apparent. Boston College picked up a highly valued asset with this move.
