This athlete was playing Pokemon GO and shockingly found himself staring down the barrel of a gun

That could have gone even worse...

Everyone has been enjoying the craze that is Pokemon GO and it's infiltrated everywhere from the workplace to elementary schools to college campuses. The University of Iowa is no exception. Defensive lineman Faith Ekakitie was out one night hunting for Pokemon when he met some trouble.

He was playing the game with his earphones in so he could listen to music while he went searching for some rare Pokemon at night —- the best time to find the more uncommon of the creatures —- and soon found himself surrounded by police pointing guns at him. He explained the situation on his Facebook page and said that he never heard the police officers telling him to comply with their wishes because his earphones were in and his music was blaring.

Ekakitie, in his post, said he fit the description of a man who robbed a bank about 10 minutes before police found the lineman at the park, which was only about three minutes away. Ekakitie said that he reached for his phone, still not hearing the police around him, and that's when things could have very well gone south because police may have believed he might be reaching for a gun instead.

Perhaps the most important thing that Ekakitie said in his post was at the end:

It is extremely sad that our society has brainwashed us all to the point where we can't feel safe being approached by the police officers in our respective communities. Not all police officers are out to get you, but at the same time, not all people who fit a criminal profile are criminals.

Fortunately, everyone is doing fine and there were no injuries. The Iowa City Police have yet to release a comment on the matter.
