Bill Belichick is staying at North Carolina, at least for now

When Belichick arrived in Chapel Hill, the question was how long he'd stay. After a 4-8 debut, the question has shifted to how long North Carolina wants him to stay, writes Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina reported that UNC is committed to Belichick for at least one more year. That commitment appears to be driven by finances as much as faith. A fast breakup would trigger a buyout in the neighborhood of $30 million, Florio notes.

Not everyone believes patience is the right play. Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer wrote that UNC should rip the Band-Aid off and move on.

He argued Belichick was never a great fit for college football, where a coach's public presence matters as much as his scheme. In DeCock's words, whatever the reset costs, it is time to pay it.

For now, UNC will continue to ride with Belichick and his top lieutenant Mike Lombardi as they enter Year Two. Their first major decision is clear. North Carolina needs better players.

That means evaluating, recruiting and landing athletes who can keep the Tar Heels competitive in the ACC.

Belichick and Lombardi have work to do. They will get another shot in 2026 to fix a roster that underwhelmed from the start. If it does not work next year, many inside the program already doubt it will ever work.
