Bill Belichick's first season at North Carolina had plenty of bumps. One of them involved balloons.

Belichick's UNC debut back in September ended with a 48-14 loss to TCU, but the postgame press conference featured an unexpected visual. A massive balloon arch in school colors, complete with silver stars, loomed behind the new Tar Heels coach and quickly became a bigger talking point than the game itself.
At the time, many assumed the display was tied to Belichick's personal life, specifically his relationship with Jordon Hudson. Hudson, 24, has drawn attention for her visible presence around Belichick during his first year in Chapel Hill and her involvement in his off-field business affairs.
According to FOIAball.com, however, the balloon spectacle was part of the university's budget. UNC reportedly spent $48,733 on football-related balloons during the 2024-25 season. The large garland seen at Belichick's press conference costs about $27 per foot through a preferred vendor, plus a delivery and installation fee, bringing the total for that setup to roughly $800.
The site also noted that Texas budgets far more, with more than $170,000 allocated annually for balloons across all sports.
Still, the optics stuck. Hudson, a former college cheerleader, attended the season opener from a suite at Kenan Memorial Stadium and was spotted alongside Randy Moss. As for Belichick, he kept things focused on football.

"We couldn't sustain it," he said after the loss. "We've got a lot of work to do."
That theme followed the Tar Heels all season. UNC finished 4-8 and missed a bowl game for the first time since 2018. On Friday, Belichick fired offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and special teams coach Mike Priefer as he reshaped the staff.
Off the field, Belichick and Hudson continued to generate headlines, including a viral moment earlier this year when Hudson interrupted a CBS interview. Belichick has said she handles his non-UNC business ventures.
The six-time Super Bowl champion even returned the favor this week, supporting Hudson at an adult cheerleading competition in Atlanta.
