Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said the body was found around 8:45 a.m. by a park ranger on the island's northwest end, via WLOX.

The discovery came as multiple agencies continued searching for 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, who was last seen Saturday at about 3 p.m. while visiting Horn Island.

Officials have not said whether the body is Wells, and identification is pending.

The search has involved the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, the U.S. Coast Guard and the United Cajun Navy.

Authorities established a command post at the Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs as crews searched both the shoreline and interior portions of the island.

Investigators previously asked anyone who was on Horn Island on Saturday or who had contact with Wells to come forward with information that could help establish his last known movements.

Wells is a former standout at Ocean Springs High School and recently joined the football program at Southwest Mississippi Community College as a wide receiver.

Before Monday's discovery, Southwest Mississippi Community College released a statement asking the community to pray for Wells' safe return.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the body and determine the circumstances surrounding the case.
