Cam Newton defends SEC even as playoff results tell a different story

It has not been a banner College Football Playoff for the SEC, but Cam Newton is not buying the idea that the conference's grip on the sport is slipping.

Newton appeared Friday on First Take and was asked whether the days of SEC dominance are over. His answer was simple: No. His reasoning was just as direct.

"If you want to go and get put on, you still go to the SEC," Newton said, pointing to television ratings as the measuring stick. "However great Coach Curt Cignetti is, I'm not about to go watch Indiana football. I'd rather watch LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi State, way before I watch Penn State. Way before I watch Michigan State or Iowa State."

To many, the argument fell flat. Ratings may matter to networks, but they have never been the deciding factor in who owns college football on the field.

And right now, the results are not lining up with the narrative.

Indiana hammered Alabama 38-3 on Thursday, a result that would have sounded absurd not long ago. Entering the semifinal round, Ole Miss is the lone SEC team still standing, and the Rebels reached that point by beating Tulane before eliminating Georgia in an all-SEC quarterfinal.

That reality has not stopped the familiar talking points from resurfacing. Hardcore SEC loyalists have leaned on brand power and conference reputation for years, especially when debating the Big Ten Conference. This week offered another reminder that those arguments do not always survive contact with the scoreboard.

Newton, an Auburn legend and longtime SEC defender, was always likely to take that side. Even now, with the conference absorbing some uncomfortable results, he is sticking to it.

The games, however, are telling a different story.
