College is supposed to be a time in which students learn about many things, including themselves and, beyond that, it is a four-year period that many treasure based on their considerable experiences on various campuses across the country. While college athletes do not always live a "normal" student life based on their exhaustive commitments to the sports they participate in, it should still be a prosperous time that many look forward to from coast to coast.
That makes the tragic stories of injury, illness and even death all the more tragic for young people and, on Sunday, word broke of an unfortunate and jarring reality with regard to College of Wooster football player Clayton Geib. The Associated Press brings word that Geib, who is just 21 years old and was experiencing his senior season at the school, passed away after being sent to the hospital following a football game on Saturday.
Per the report, there is not an official cause of death at this point, but the senior chemistry major was a starter for Wooster along the offensive line on Saturday and simply complained about being unwell after the contest. Regardless of the official cause of death, this is a brutal blow for both his family and the university and losing anyone at the age of 21 is just too far soon.
